Community: Networking

Networking is a must for all blogs - no matter what type of blog you run! Especially for beginners. Once you've established a fan-base, you can lighten up on networking a little bit, but in the beginning you really need to focus on this as one of your top priorities.

For the fashion blogger:

For the fashion blogger, the biggest networking tools you can use are online fashion communities, like we've discussed. Be sure to keep your online profiles up to date to show you are constantly active. You don't have to update everyday, but don't let weeks go by! Your fans or readers will start to forget about you and you'll have to make up for lost time.

Be sure to use social networking! Read our topic on Twitter and Facebook more closely for tips on how to use social networking to your benefit. Be sure to keep any social networking profile or online fashion community profile personal along with business! You don't want to constantly spam readers on these sites… you need to add a personal touch! Share things you're excited about.. even if they don't have anything to do with your theme or niche. Show readers you are real! They'll appreciate it.

My personal story:
When I first started my fashion blog, I quickly found Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky and we instantly bonded. We were each other's favorites and promoted the heck out of each other and still do so to this day. Our blogs are such twinsie blogs… both of us growing together, celebrating each other's opportunities and successes and we've met up together in NYC twice and have become really great friends. Like… she would be in my wedding if I got married today.

So find someone out there who you can be friends with! Not someone that wants to ride on your coat-tails of success but will promote and support you as you do them! It has to be a fun, mutual friendship! If you have a "friend" that is constantly asking you to link them, do them favors, etc… you might want to rethink why they want to be friends. It's easy to pick them out, so keep your eyes peeled.

Comment on other blogs! If you receive 30 comments on your post, try to set aside a half hour of your time to comment on their blogs! Readers know it's not possible to always comment back on the comments you receive, but if you're just starting out, you should make an effort. It means a lot to someone to receive a comment on their blog (I read every single one and try to comment back to as many as possible!) Comment on your favorite blogs, network with girls who are similar to you and put yourself out there! It's all about making connections.

5 Tips and Ideas on How to Promote your Blog:

1. Using your twitter account, make sure you respond to all @ mentions! If you get #FF @ mentions, you should thank them! You should also do your own #FF! It's also nice to shout out someone on Twitter saying how much you really liked their outfit. Start a conversation!

2. Promote others! If you find someone that you really love their style and feel like they deserve the spotlight, promote them! Talk about them on Twitter, Facebook, in a blog post. They'll appreciate it and spread the word!

3. Create a "favorite blogs" section in your sidebar or on a separate page in your blog. It's a great way to show you have classy taste and a way to promote your favorites.

4. Create a little button for your blog to put inside a widget on your sidebar! That way readers can grab your button, paste it on their blogs and draw traffic to you!

5. Do a feature on a blogger or an interview! Every season, I do a "featured blogger" where I interview one of my favorite bloggers at the moment. They'll talk about it, other bloggers will see you promote and they'll appreciate it!

Community: Online fashion communities

My personal story: I first discovered fashion blogging in September 2009. I honestly googled, "How to get a personal style" and a result came up on who what wear on four fashion bloggers. I was instantly inspired. So, I started clicking around… and discovered some bloggers that were real, down-to-earth and had a blog that inspired me to start my own. So, I started a blog. I took my little personal "this is what we did this weekend" blog and turned it into a focused personal style blog… but I had no idea how to network. I started researching personal style blogs and came across Chictopia. Chictopia honestly changed my life at the time and was a huge kickstart for my blog! I signed up for an account, started posting photos, linking back to my blog and before I knew it… a month later, I was style icon with a blog on the rise! It was overwhelming. I remember the night I got the email with the subject line "style icon" and I screamed and jumped around our apartment. I wouldn't be where I am without online communities like Chictopia, Weardrobe and Lookbook.nu. Let me break it down.

By now you've already figured out your theme, your niche, your tagline, your place in this blogging world. Now… how do you get noticed? The answer? Online fashion communities. There are so many out there, but the ones that have truly helped me have been Chictopia, Weardrobe and Lookbook.nu. Each one is very different.

Chictopia:

Chictopia is an online fashion community where anyone can sign up for an account. They call themselves the largest online community that gives everyone a voice in fashion. They have over 100,000 users and are always growing. They are one of the top 4 style sites and have a huge presence in the online fashion community. I'm sure you've seen hundreds of blogs with their Chictopia badge on it. They have several features that I'll quickly explain and I'll tell how how I use Chictopia to my benefit.

Style Gallery is one of my favorite features. They have a gallery of photos of girls whose photos have been rated "chic" by members. I use this daily for inspiration. They filter the photos by making members vote photos "chic" or not… so that way you don't have to sift through a bunch of mediocre, dark, blurry, fuzzy, photos. This gallery gives you the best of what is on Chictopia so you can be inspired. You can browse by clothing type, colors, trends, everything. It's so helpful if you want to style up an olive green article of clothing… you can click on the color and find hundreds of outfits styling up an item that is olive green. I love that feature.

Rewards are items Chictopia posts from sponsors! You can earn chic points by doing several things: uploading a photo, commenting, gaining "chic" votes, gaining "fans" or "favorites" to build up enough points to purchase a chic reward! Keep on the look out though - they go super fast. I've only been able to snag one item from them!

Chic Swap is where you can sign up to become a Chic VIP so you can upload to the swap. You can post items, sign up for items and swap clothing online!

Forum They have a great forum with over 10,000 topics and over 164,000 posts on everything from living and advice, to current events, to culture and interests.

Community is where you can find out about recent contests Chictopia is holding (they hold SO many great ones!), they talk about Style Icons (hang tight, I'll give you some tips on how to become a style icon soon!) and the Best of Chictopia with some of the top-rated photos and outfits.

So go in, create an account and start updating with outfits! It's such a fun community; make the most of it!

Tips on how to become a style icon:

- Post everyday: I know, it can be really tough to post everyday, but it's the best way to ensure you are constantly exposed to readers so they can add you as a favorite during the month.

- Step out of the box: When I was in the running for style icon, I had to be really really creative. I used a scarf as a cardigan, wore the funkiest floral tights I could find and tried to work my closet in a completely fresh and unique way.

- Comment on other photos: It's all about networking. If you comment on other photos, comment back on who has commented on your photos, you'll just be exposing yourself to so many more people who can add you as a favorite! The trick of the game is to get as many "favorites" as possible!

- DO NOT message or comment on people's photos and ask them to add you as a favorite. That will never work, plus it's annoying spam!

Weardrobe:

Weardrobe is a great online fashion community. It's a bit more low-key, more focused on the actual outfit photos instead of trying to filter it out by trend or color. Let's focus on the benefits of Weardrobe!

Featured: If you upload your outfit pictures to Weardrobe, you have the opportunity to get featured! They pick only the best outfits in the community and put it on their "featured" page along with links to shop similar styles! It's super helpful if you spot something you like on the featured page… you can shop it really easily.

Recent: Recent shows you a quick and easy look at some of the most recent outfit posts that have been styled. I love the simplicity of Weardrobe and how they let the bloggers do the talking mostly.

Explore: They haven't been keeping up on Weardrobe as much as I'd like to see, but they used to do interviews and features on bloggers! I like to check out their "blogs we love" sidebar. Such a great resource to some amazing blogs out there!

Contest: Weardrobe used to host some amazing contests. I won a $50 Aldo gift card once for a best look in heels! One of the first contests I've ever won. I really hope they start picking this feature back up soon.

Weardrobe 100: This is where they pick the top 100 users for the year and do a feature on them. It's so flattering to be named as a Weardrobe 100!

My favorite feature about Weardrobe:

You can name your clothing articles anything you like. So, whenever I upload a photo to Weardrobe, I am very very particular on what I name the item, so I never name the same clothing article the same name. Why? Because it's AWESOME to be able to click on your outfit photo, click on the name of the clothing article and see all the different ways you've remixed that item! Weardrobe is like… a remixer's dream! You can't do that on any other online fashion community.

Lookbook.nu:

Lookbook.nu is a "collective fashion consciousness". The home page is empowering. These are real people.. and they look like they've come out of a fashion magazine! It's such a great resource for inspiration.

Hot: Lookbook.nu judges looks based on hypes. Users can "hype" a look and it will rise to the top of the "hot" page. It's a big deal to be placed on the "hot" page!

New: The new page showcases all of the newest photos that have been put on Lookbook. It's a great way to see all of the looks instead of just the "hyped" ones.

Top: The top page contains the top looks of the week, by total hype.

Leader: This page showcases all of the big names on Lookbook.nu. It's kind of like Chictopia's Style Icon, but without the "status". They have the biggest names of today, this week and of all time.

My favorite feature about Lookbook.nu:

The GUYS! On Chictopia and Weardobe, we are lacking some major guy fashion inspiration! I love using Lookbook.nu to look for new ideas for Brett. He secretly denies me and says he hates what they are all wearing… but he'll be peeking over my shoulder and I'll spot him picking up an item that he saw on Lookbook. :)

I hope that helps you learn more about the online fashion communities! There are several out there that can help you, but these three are the biggest ones that have helped me in my fashion blogging journey. Keep your eyes peeled though - there are so many online communities popping up and another one might fit what you need more!

Community: IFB

Independent Fashion Bloggers is the #1 resource for… of course, independent fashion bloggers. It's a huge online community where fashion bloggers can share experiences, create resources so that everyone can benefit and build a better blog. They post articles and have amazing forums that are so helpful to read through. Let's dig into IFB!

If you have a fashion blog, you should register for IFB. It's a free online resource. Anyone operating an independently owned fashion blog can join. The requirements are that your blog must be about fashion and your blog must be independently owned. Easy right? They review every blog that joins, so make sure you meet requirements before signing up.

How it works? Once you are signed up and approved, IFB can be an amazing resource for you. On the home page, there are widgets where you can add new things to help you in your experience with IFB. Customize them however works best for you!

IFB Community: IFB community is where you can hear the latest from IFB (like a news feed), you can see the latest groups (groups are a great way to connect with other bloggers) and see newest members and latest blog posts and bookmarks.

Blog home: Blog home will show you Featured posts (so fun to read!), IFB on Twitter, videos on past conferences and new talking points.

Chicgeek: Chicgeek is a great resource for articles on how to survive technology! In order to be a fashion blogger, you must remain up-to-date on the latest trends in technology! How to make your blog mobile-friendly, how to survive fashion week tech, how to use twitter tools, etc. It's a great little place to learn about what you need to keep up on tech-wise.

My favorite thing about IFB? Hint: It happens twice a year!
During each fashion week, IFB hosts a conference for everything fashion-blogger related. They have videos of last year's conference where they talk about so many great topics. I attended last fall's conference and took so many great notes! If you can't attend during NYFW, they always do a live-steam that you must check out!

Community: Twitter/Facebook

by Elizabeth, Delightfully Tacky

As the world of online social networking has grown, Twitter and Facebook have become king and queen of an empire. For the longest time I held a grudge against Twitter because it just seemed like a stupid website to me. I didn't understand why people wanted to read about what Kim Kardashian ate for breakfast or what Miley Cyrus did the night before, and I certainly didn't feel like sharing the banalities of my day to day life on Twitter. Then I realized that having a Twitter for a business or website is a totally different animal! It's a great way to share information with your followers and fellow bloggers in a quick and efficient way. Plus, with all the smart phones out there, a lot of people have access to that information wherever they go with their phones!

Once I joined Twitter, I could let people know that I put up a new post, or that there was a new giveaway. People could tweet me questions, I could ask other people questions, and I could retweet relevant information to my followers. It has become a great tool and now I really enjoy using Twitter for my blog!

I make it a point to only follow Twitter feeds that I feel are important to me, or will tweet great information that I'll want to check out. I feel like if I follow too many people on Twitter, the sheer volume of tweets to sift through becomes totally unmanageable! Find what system works for you, though. You can create "lists" in Twitter, too, grouping related people together. For example, I have a list that groups all my sponsors' tweets, and a list that groups my blogger friends' tweets together. It's a nice way to organize the people that you follow.

I made a Facebook page for Delightfully Tacky long before I joined Twitter, probably because I already had a personal Facebook profile and I could see how a Facebook page could be advantageous. Facebook is another way to meet your followers where they're already at. Pretty much everyone is on Facebook, lets face it. It makes it super easy to let your followers know what's up, and it posts your updates in their news feed. I've linked my blog to Facebook so that every time a new post goes up, it automatically updates on my Facebook page. I can ask my followers questions on Facebook, post photos and so much more. I have a photo album on my Facebook page that shares some of my funny candid photos, which is another way I like to be accessible to my readers. You can put stuff like that on your Facebook that you wouldn't necessarily post on your blog. You can also link your Facebook page and your twitter account so that when you post a status update to Facebook, it automatically tweets that status update as well!

Both Facebook and Twitter are always in my top ten referring sites. They're a great way to connect to your readers in a more organic way. Since most people already use Facebook and Twitter, you're just making it easier for them to connect to you! And that's what you want. You want it to be easy for your audience to access your blog and relevant information associated with it. Facebook and Twitter are perfect in this capacity!
